Akendi Press Release

AKENDI HELPS IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY OF TELEVISION CONTENT FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED USERS IN CANADA

Akendi – a leader in user experience strategy, design, and testing – is contributing to an initiative that will improve the accessibility of broadcasting content for visually impaired and non-sighted users in Canada..

TORONTO, ON – July 17, 2017 – Akendi was instrumental in a study spearheaded by Rogers and funded by the Broadcasting Accessibility Fund (BAF) that seeks to understand and improve the experience of low-sighted and non-sighted television users. The resulting report is now available publicly with the intention that product designers from any telecom company can begin to deliver a more accessible television experience.

Rogers approached Akendi to contribute its expertise in user experience research, design, and testing. In addition to informing the study and its recommendations, Akendi’s inputs have become the basis for a new, open source, set-top-box prototype design created by Rogers.

Vincent Primeau, User Experience Researcher at Rogers said: “Being part of one of Canada’s premier television broadcasters, we did our best to push for the adoption of accessible broadcasting standards nationally. This research project – which is part of a widespread initiative to improve accessibility of all of our services – would not have been possible without Akendi’s research, testing, and insights.”

Daniel Iaboni, Principal Experience Architect at Akendi added: “It is extremely gratifying to be involved in a project which will have a direct impact on the experience of so many Canadians. We are pleased to work with Rogers, a telecommunications company that is taking action in pursuing the mission of improving the accessibility of its set-top boxes for visually impaired users.”

Participating in all three phases of the study, Akendi’s work included:

> A literature review and user interviews with numerous visually impaired television users
> Development of user personas and experience map to inform future service improvements
> Creating design guidelines and assisting Rogers to design a prototype of a new, more accessible set-top box
> Testing the usability of the prototype in users’ homes
> A detailed report providing findings, insights, and design recommendations for set-top boxes, input devices, and remote-control devices

Notably, repeated user testing saw a significant decrease in the number of usability issues with each iteration of the design.

About the Report
The design guidelines report, as presented to the BAF Board of Directors, is called Enhancing the TV Experience for Visually-Impaired Users: Designing ten-foot interfaces with screen reading capabilities. The report includes Akendi’s full report, which begins on page 36. It is publicly available online here.
