User Centered Design

Improve the customer and user experience with User Centred Design (UCD)

Akendi’s UCD approach is systematic, repeatable and effective.

The UCD process underpins Akendi processes and techniques, including intentional experience creation and Experience Thinking™. UCD is systematic and repeatable, proven over many projects and industries to deliver high usability (ISO 9241-210:2010) and successful user experiences for customers and end users. The ISO 13407: 1999 Human-centred design processes for interactive systems standard is an earlier version of this approach and describes the elements of what is referred to as Human Centered Design (HCD).

HCD user centered design process

HCD / UCD process

The process ensures:
> early involvement of users
> an appropriate match of function to user tasks
> enough iteration of design solutions
> a multi-disciplinary design approach.

There are four main components:
> understand and capture the context of use
> specify the user, business & organisational requirements
> create more than one concept design solution
> validate designs against user requirements and iterate when needed.

History

In 2010 a revision to the 9241 and 13407 standards came out: ISO 9241-210:2010. This latest standard provides the requirements and process recommendations for human-centred design principles and activities throughout the End to End product experience life cycle. In 2011 the FDA released a draft document on Applying Human Factors and Usability Engineering to Optimize Medical Device Design. This draft is driving UCD practises in the medical device creation in the US. In Europe the IEC 62366 application of usability engineering to medical devices is applied in the creation of medical devices ranging from drug dispensers to MRI systems.

Together, these ISO process standards provide a solid foundation on which the Akendi methodology is built.
